December 24, 1923 - December 15, 2021
Hertha Doris Dickinson, 1923-2021 Hertha Doris Dickinson (Doris/”Mott’; nee Whitford) passed away peacefully on Wednesday, December 15th, 2021, at the age of 97. She joins her beloved husband, Retired Major John D. Dickinson, Sr, U.S.A.F., who left us 24 years ago. She was a long-time resident of White Horse Village in Newtown Square, PA. She is survived by 3 children Dana (John Ward), Barbara, and John; 5 grandchildren Jennifer (Tom), Kimberly (Matt), Sara (John), Paul Russell and Samuel Russell; 6 great grandchildren Patricia, Preston, Priscilla, Paisley, Paige and Jocelyn; a Niece, Patricia Delano, and Family; a Nephew John Francis, and Family; a Niece, Inge Francis, & Family; and a host of friends and colleagues. She was a devoted supporter of the National MS Society, participating in the MS 150 City to Shore Rides for over 3 decades between Philadelphia/Cherry Hill, NJ, and Ocean City, NJ. She raised thousands of dollars in support of research and patient care for those who suffer from MS. She was a devotee of the Nelson Eddy Society, Clydesdale horses, movies (especially oldies), Star Trek, elder education, swimming, and dogs - Rhodesian Ridgebacks and Jack Russells especially. Her volunteer efforts spanned reading to 3rd graders, registering voters at the election polls, and expanding and running the Resident Archives Department at White Horse Village where she lived for over 30 years. After she raised her 3 children, she worked as an Administrator at the engineering firm of Day & Zimmermann in Philadelphia for almost a decade. She was an early member of Reformation Evangelical Lutheran Church, in Media, PA, where her college classmate, Robert Anderson, was the first minister. Her children were raised in that church as well, and her husband, John, was renowned for his “management” of coffee hour after services and helium balloons at the annual picnic. She was a tireless volunteer to the sister church, Christ Lutheran, in Philadelphia, PA, and also to the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America Office. Both Doris and John had their last wish come true to donate their remains to medical research through Pennsylvania’s Humanity Gift Registry. After research is complete, Doris’s cremated remains will be laid to rest beside her beloved husband at Arlington National Cemetery, in honor of John’s decorated service to the U.S. Army Air Corp in World War II.
